beginning of the story Oedipus is depicted as a noble caring man. This term inevitably comes up almost every time you talk about a piece of ancient Greek literature. The word hamartia comes from the Greek hamartanein, which means "missing the mark." The hero aims his arrow at the bull's eye, but ends up hitting something altogether unexpected. It seems that Oedipus rightly deserves the throne of Thebes. The Greeks just didn't have quite the same ideas of sin that later societies developed. (Kennedy and Gioia 856) I felt compelled to write about Oedipus because he seems to exemplify Aristotles definition of a tragic hero. Flaws are what we have in common with each other, and all characteristics that make us human. Despite their good intentions, the two characters are blinded from the impact of their actions as they unknowingly harm their families.
