In the fifth letter he wondered why Voltaire had not been able to imbue the Genevan councilors, who frequently met him, "with that spirit of tolerance which he preaches without cease, and of which he sometimes has need". However, his father very much wanted him to become a lawyer, so Voltaire pretended to work in Paris as an assistant to a lawyer, while actually spending much of his time writing satirical poetry. 183 He regarded Hindus as "a peaceful and innocent people, equally incapable of hurting others or of defending themselves". As a result, he was twice sentenced to prison and once to temporary exile to England. After his stay in England Voltaire became interested in philosophical optimism, and his thinking reflected closely Newtons view of a divinely ordered human condition, to which Alexander Pope gave powerful poetic expression in the Essay on Man (17334).
